Why You Need an Everyday Carry Bag

Your choice of bag can make or break your satisfaction with your EDC gear.

We’ve seen it all too often: A guy takes an interest in everyday carry, maybe after being introduced to a really slick knife or a satisfying clicky pen. One thing leads to another, and what starts as a hobby — turns into a full-blown EDC obsession!

Okay, so that’s not really a problem (unless you’re spending your rent check on new carabiners in which case… Get some help, man). The problem comes when you have a collection of everyday carry gadgets that’s above and beyond your ability to carry them in an organized and efficient manner.

That’s one of the big reasons we’re in the EDC bag business: To give guys a good looking and long lasting bag, made in America and ready to make their days smoother, neater, and overall better.

We firmly believe that every guy should have an everyday carry bag that fits their particular style. With that in mind, we’ve put together this guide to both convince you of the benefits of investing a little more in a great EDC bag (rather than a so-so one) and help you decide on which NutSac product is perfect for you.

The Importance of Preparation

Being prepared for whatever your day brings is the essence of outfitting your everyday carry kit. Which means that depending on the type of life you lead, your requirements for everyday carry can differ drastically. And depending on what you’re carrying, the type of bag you need will change too (more on that in a moment).

We’ve covered the everyday carry gear essentials that every guy needs in detail on the blog — but in case you haven’t read that one yet, here’s the basics of preparedness for the three main types of EDC kits:

Practical everyday carry will equip you with the basics for whatever you might encounter around the house, at your trade job, or while out on the town; think small multi-tools and a good pocket knife. Tactical EDC is for folks like law enforcement personnel and outdoorsmen who need their tools to keep up with anything (and may include a sidearm). Professional carry favors form over function to some degree, and prioritizes the looks of a minimalist and efficient selection of everyday goods.

Once you’ve determined which type of EDC archetype describes you best, you’ll be better prepared to choose the right size of bag to hold it all.

Size Matters: How to Choose an EDC Bag

Once you have an approximate idea of how much (and exactly what) you’ll be carrying, you’re ready to find a bag that’s the real Goldilocks right size — not too big and not too small, but just right to keep all your gear in its place.

On the small end, our Man-Bag, Dammit is hugely popular for a “just the essentials” EDC kit. That makes it excellent for practical carry in particular, or for a pared-down tactical loadout.

Both our TacSac and Satchel are available in 11, 13, and 15 inches sizes — but they’re not a direct comparison by any means.

As the name implies, the TacSac is made for tactical carry; its molle webbing and four-zipper system for side access give it fantastic versatility for a tactical loadout. If you’re carrying anything beyond your wallet, keys, phone, and an accessory or two, it will give you the organizational capacity you really need.

The Satchel, on the other hand, offers a streamlined look and feel that’s more appropriate for practical and professional use. For an even classier touch, consider upgrading to one of the rich Madone leather Jones bags.

For all three styles of carry though, you’re going to want to make absolutely sure that your choice of bag can carry all of your electronic devices. We’ve put together a straightforward sizing guide for your reference here, where you can choose your device and instantly have a readout on what bags will fit best.

How to Organize an EDC Bag

Having a durable, good looking bag to toss all your everyday carry gadgets into is only the first step. To really up your game, you may want to consider adding a few organization accessories — or in the case of tactical carry, building out your ideal modular carry solution.

Something as simple as our leather caddy organizer will keep your most-used EDC gear exactly where you need it. That way, you’re never fishing around in your bag for your pocket knife or flashlight when it’s go time.

An admin pouch is an even more complete way to organize and store your EDC essentials. We make ours with tactical carry in mind, giving you stash pockets and external molle webbing for quick grab-and-go access.

And if you’re carrying a phone, tablet, or other smart device with you, we can’t understate the benefit of carrying a pair of cable wraps. They’ll keep all of your cords in one place and free of tangles, ready to go whenever it’s time to charge.
